Feel Your Feelings

What is keeping you from doing what you want to do?

  • Want to ask that girl out?
  • Want to tryout for the ballroom team?
  • Want to quit your job?
  • Want to run a marathon?

I’ll tell you what is stopping you… Fear of Emotion.

  • Fear of feeling rejected.
  • Fear of feeling self-doubt.
  • Fear of feeling judged.
  • Fear of feeling failure.
The Driving Force

Now, let me tell you the driving force for every single human’s actions.  Emotion. Everything we do, and don’t do is: because we think it is going to make us feel a certain way.

But, what are emotions, anyway?  And do we really need to be afraid of them?

Not. At. All.  An emotion is simply a chemical vibration in our body.  We think a thought, our brain sends chemicals out to different parts of our body, and then, we feel that emotion.

That is it.

Making Emotions Manageable

It’s interesting that nowadays, many of us actually pay money to feel emotion.  If we think about some of our favorite movies, why do we love them so much? It’s usually because they take us on an emotional journey.  When we walk out of some of the BEST movies… we love them because we’ve experienced a huge range of emotion. Sadness, triumph, compassion, suspense, worry, anticipation, and if it’s a scary movie… sometimes even fear.

Somehow in life… feeling those same emotions feels a little bit intimidating.  But, it doesn’t have to be. When we really understand that a feeling is just a vibration in our bodies, and that it can’t hurt us, all of the emotions seem a little bit more manageable.

What if I told you that I had a syringe of “Rejection” that was going to inject into your body?  If I promised you $50,000, would you be willing to have the serum injected and feel Rejection for 5 minutes while the chemical cycled through your body?  My guess is, yes.

And what if I told you that you were going to have to feel Rejection 33 times, before you found the girl of your dreams?  Would you be willing to do it?

Avoiding Emotion Keeps Us Stuck

But, so many times I see young adults block themselves from the future they want, because they are unwilling to feel negative emotions.  When we avoid negative emotion, it keeps us stuck.

Now, I’m not saying that it is fun to feel rejection, self-doubt, judgement, or failure.  But, I promise you… an emotion cannot kill you. And in fact, they make us stronger.

Imagine what you’d be able to accomplish if you were willing to feel your feelings?

Stop shying away from emotion.  The only reason they feel scary to us is simply because we are not used to feeling them.

So, get used to feeling them.

Because once you decide you are willing to feel ALL of the emotions.  There is nothing that can stop you.
